An Academi weekend retreat at
Manorbier Youth Hostel, Pembrokeshire

 Welsh Coast

With Robert Nisbet
10–12 November 2006

An opportunity for writers to relax, write, think and talk their way through a slow autumn weekend.

Short story writer and tutor Robert Nisbet will join us to take a workshop and to discuss your work-in-progress or help you begin new work inspired by the time and place. The main focus will be on short prose and travel writing but poets and novelists are more than welcome to use the weekend to their own advantage.

Wales’s first travel writer, Giraldus Cambrensis/Gerald of Wales, was born in Manorbier Castle around 1146AD and he described the area as “the pleasantest spot in Wales”. He modestly dscribed his Journey Through Wales as “a clear mirror reflecting the wild and trackless places we passed through…. and records our witty sayings, the hazards of the road, and the accidents that befell us”.

Offshore lies the monastic island of Caldey and the whole setting of village, farmland, church and castle holds echoes of feudal life in Wales.

This retreat is part of an on-going Academi series of writers’ experiences that are taking place in some of Wales’s most beautiful and remote places.

The weekend runs from Friday afternoon 10 November 2006 until Sunday 12 November 2006. The costs are £80 (concessions £70) to cover accommodation in Manorbier Youth Hostel, supper on Friday night, three meals on Saturday and breakfast & lunch on the Sunday. Accommodation is in single-sex dormitories and places are limited to 20 course members. Book now with a £20 deposit.
