Ivy Alvarez

Wales Arts International is sending Ivy Alvarez, a Cardiff–based Australian writer, to Sydney next month to participate in the Poetry Picture Show, a collaboration of film and poetry that includes readings online, on the radio and in person on the theme of poetry and the moving image, with film adaptations produced by the Red Room Company.

Cardiff, Wales – September 13, 2006 – Award-winning poet Ivy Alvarez will travel from South Wales to New South Wales next month for The Poetry Picture Show, with support from Wales Arts International and Academi. Sydney-based Red Room Company commissioned Ivy Alvarez and nine other Australian poets to write poems exploring poetry’s relationship to film and the theme of the poetry picture show.

The ten poets will present their work on three media: online through blog discussion and podcasts, via radio broadcast and in person at a live performance on 6 October. The poets also collaborated with Johanna Featherstone, Red Room Company’s artistic director, to create ten short films based on their commissioned poems. The film adaptations will be screened during the live performance in October, with plans to screen the short films in Cardiff at a later date.

“The Poetry Picture Show promises to be a world-class poetry event. I’m grateful to Wales Arts International for its support,” said Ms Alvarez.

Ivy Alvarez is the only Australian poet travelling from Cardiff to Sydney for the Poetry Picture Show, which presents ten Australian poets’ work online through blog discussion and podcasts, radio broadcast and in person.

Ivy’s first book, Mortal (Washington, DC: Red Morning Press, 2006), will be released next month. She is the recipient of numerous awards, prizes and residencies, first gaining recognition as Artiste-in-Residence for Australia’s internationally acclaimed television network, SBS. In addition to her poetry, she also writes plays, articles and reviews.
