Poetry Residency
20 – 24 March 2007

There are many pararells between Galeri in Caernarfon and Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff. They are recently opened, multi-art form centres presenting performing and visual arts, with resident companies working in the centres. To celebrate all these links, both centres have decided to embark on a journey of artistic twinning. All of this will start in March 2007, with a Poetry Residency with support from the Academi. Gillian Clarke will travel up to Arfon, while Gwyneth Glyn will come down to the capital for the week.
Gillian Clarke was born in Cardiff, and in 2005 she was appointed Capital Poet to celebrate the Cardiff Centenary. She has travelled in Europe and the United States giving poetry readings and lectures, and her work has been translated into ten languages. As well as being a talented poet, she is also a playwright, editor, translator and the President of Tŷ Newydd, the writers centre in North Wales, which she co-founded.
Born and bred in Eifionydd, Gwyneth Glyn was educated at Jesus College, Oxford. She is Wales’ Children’s Poet Laureate for 2006-07, and she won the Crown at the Llŷn and Eifionydd Urdd Eisteddfod in 1998. Gwyneth is also a playwright and author, and was nominated for the Tir Na n’Og Award shortlist in 2003. On top of this, she is also a singer, and travels around Wales performing her poems and songs.
It is hoped that the poets will provide a fresh response to the centres through their creative work, but they will also be running workshops, performing their work and responding to the building and it’s creative activities.
