The First Step: Writing For Stage And Radio

30 April 2007 – 5 May 2007
With: Gilly Adams and Laurence Allan
Guest: Kate McAll, Senior Drama Producer, BBC Radio 4 Wales
Have you always wanted to write a play for radio or the stage but wondered exactly how to go about it? This week will provide plenty of hints about dramatic structure and technique, narrative, dialogue and the creation of character. No previous experience is necessary but you should come prepared to write everyday in response to a variety of stimuli and to enjoy hearing your work read out loud.
Gilly Adams
Gilly is a director and workshop leader who has specialised in script development. For many years she was the Artistic Director of the new writing company Made In Wales, where she pioneered the new play Write On festivals. She is a founder member of the international Magdalena Project for women in theatre for which she co–leads the Performing Words workshops. She was also an associate artist of Welfare State International for more than 20 years where she worked on alternative ceremonies and rites of passage. Most recently Gilly has worked for BBC Wales where she has been variously the Director of the Writers’ Unit, a Drama Producer for Radio Wales and Radio 4 and the Storytelling leader for Capture Wales.
Laurence Allan
Larry was born in Pontypridd in 1954 and has been a professional playwright for over twenty years. In this time he has written for almost all the theatre companies in Wales from his first with Made In Wales right up to his current commission with Sgrypt Cymru. Last year his play Flowers From Tunisia won the best new play in the Theatre In Wales awards. He has written extensively for radio recently winning the Broken And Blue BBC Radio 3 prize for a play with music, I Thought I Heard Buddy Bolden Shout. As well as his theatre work he is currently working on a novel, The Last Buffalo.
