Tŷ Newydd Festival

Tŷ Newydd Festival is upon us yet again. Here’s a little taster of what you can expect.

Thursday 7 June

The Great Outdoors - Robert Macfarlane and Jim Perrin in conversation with Mike Harding
Galeri, Caernarfon, 7.30 pm, £7/£5
Where better to talk about wild places and meet those who write about them than between Snowdon and the sea? To open Tŷ Newydd Festival, Britain’s two most eminent wilderness writers, Robert Macfarlane and Jim Perrin, will read from their own work and be interviewed by Mike Harding - musician, comedian and Radio 2 presenter, as well as being himself the author of several acclaimed books on walking in Britain and the Himalayas. Tŷ Newydd in association with Galeri, and supported by Academi.

Friday 8 June

Robert Minhinnick: "Saint John’s Sunflowers: Some notes on Sustainable Living"
Marine Hotel, Cricieth, 7.30 pm, £6/£4
Robert Minhinnick, prize-winning poet, essayist and special advisor to the charity "Sustainable Wales", gives his personal view of what’s sustainable, and what’s not, in modern life. This will be followed by discussion and then live music in the bar. The talk will be available in print on the evening and then on the Tŷ Newydd website.

Saturday 9 June

David Crystal - A Journey in Search of English
Lloyd George Museum, Llanystumdwy, 10.00 am, £4/£3
David Crystal recently went on a journey to find out more about the fascinating variety and history of the English language, in Britain and overseas, and has published his findings in a linguistic travelogue, By Hook or by Crook: a Journey in Search of English. He talks about accents and dialect, place names and etymologies, and reflects on the language’s continually changing and elusive character.

Carol Ann Duffy and Gillian Clarke
Castell Deudraeth, Portmeirion, 11.30 am, £20
These two great poets read their work, and to follow there will be an opportunity to have lunch in their company and celebrate Gillian Clarke’s 70th birthday. Admission to Portmeirion village included.

Book Club with Gwyneth Lewis
Marine Hotel, Cricieth, 4.00 pm, £5/£3
Read Two in a Boat by Gwyneth Lewis and come and ask her your questions. This afternoon discussion will be lead by Jon Gower.

From Near and Far
No.29, Fish Restaurant, Cricieth, 7.00pm, £16
Come for a good meal, stay for a chance to listen to poets Robert Minhinnick and Gwyneth Lewis reading from their work and to meet overseas writers who are visiting the Festival.

Sunday 10 June

River Walk
Starting from Tŷ Newydd, 9.30 am, £3
A river walk in the company of naturalist Nigel Brown, a guest on many Tŷ Newydd courses. He will explore some of the fascinating interactions in nature between the physical stage and the wildlife of this bioluxuriant valley. This walk will return to Tŷ Newydd by 11.00 am.

Sealines
Tŷ Newydd, Llanystumdwy, 11.00 am, free
Last summer writers from Wales visited European port cities and international writers visited cardiff and other Welsh ports. Janis Esbergs from Latvia and Welsh artist Ffion Rhys discuss this exciting project with Robert Minhinnick. Ffion’s work, the result of her collaboration with the writers, will be on display at Tŷ Newydd during the festival.

Literary Lunch
Mynydd Ednyfed Country House Hotel, Cricieth, 12.30 pm, £17.50
Good food and fine company. A two course lunch in the conservatory at Mynydd Ednyfed followed by a short talk by Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas. Also a chance to enjoy the wonderful sound of the harp with Gwenan Gibbard. This event is organised by Tŷ Newydd in collaboration with Cricieth Festival. Simultaneous translation will be provided at this event.

Family Fun Afternoon
Tŷ Newydd, Llanystumdwy, 2.30 pm, £5 adults, children free
Bring the whole family to the beautiful garden of Tŷ Newydd. Have tea on the lawn and enjoy a story or two told by renowned storyteller Daniel Morden, a puppet show (Cwmni Cortyn), and the chance to sing and dance to music by local star, Gwyneth Glyn, and the fabulous folk band Newfolks.
