Nature Writing: Wildlife into Words
5 – 10 November 2007
Mark Cocker & Kathleen Jamie
This groundbreaking course on nature writing will take every advantage of the wonderful Welsh mountains, the seashore and riverine woods around Tŷ Newydd to blend together its two core essentials: our outdoor exploration of the landscape, the other species - especially birds and trees - and the elements, then our indoor reflection on how we can turn such wild encounters into language.
Guest: Redmond O’Hanlon
Journeys and Journals (Optional extended course)
19 – 24 November 2007
Celia Brayfield & Christine Evans
This is a course for people who are serious about their writing and want to explore the process. It will involve keeping a journal about your own work in progress. We shall be looking particularly at the long poem and the prose of discovery, whether memoir, travelogue or even narrative.
Guest: Jim Perrin
Suggested reading: Burning the Candle by Christine Evans (Gomer 2006), Deep France: A Writer’s Year in the Bearn by Celia Brayfield (Pan, 2004).
Optional distance tutorials (Additional cost £40)
Participants are invited to submit a maximum of 6 poems of moderate length (or the equivalent) or 4,000 words of prose for a written commentary by the tutors 4 weeks before the start of the course. Further pieces of work can be submitted for commentary after the course. Full details of this are available from Tŷ Newydd.
