Delve into the imagination of Leonard Cohen “the greatest living poet on earth” Rufus Wainwright
On Wednesday 17 October Academi are hosting a pre-show Poetry Workshop in the Glyn Jones Centre in conjunction with the performance of Philip Glass’ Book of Longing. This European premiere of a new work by Philip Glass is based on the images and poetry of Leonard Cohen. Book of Longing features music composed by Glass, set to Cohen’s powerful words and accompanied by artwork and imagery created by Cohen in his book published under the same title.
The workshop will look at Leonard Cohen’s career and recent work and move into a creative writing exercise in which lines will be written in response. These will then be folded into lines from Cohen’s own work and ‘performed’ by the group as a collaborative tribute.
The workshop, run by Graham Hartill, aims to respond creatively and collectively to the work of a major 20th century artist and to deepen our appreciation of it. The use of loops and repetition will mirror the minimalist techniques of Glass and other American composers and prepare the way for a fascinating performance from Philip Glass in the Wales Millennium Centre.
Tickets cost £10.00. This includes the workshop and your ticket to the evening performance.
