2007 John Tripp Award for Spoken Poetry

The sixteen poets who will be continuing on in the 2007 John Tripp Award for Spoken Poetry have now all been announced. Heats have taken place in Cardiff, Swansea, Wrexham and Merthyr Tydfil, with each audience enjoying a thrilling yet tense evening as they waited for the 4 winning poets to be announced.
The finalists are:
From Cardiff (judges - Claire Peate and Grahame Davies):
Hugh Doyle, Brian John, Mab Jones and Betty Lane
From Swansea (judges David Woolley and Margot Morgan):
Katie Cooper, John Bilsborough, Carl Griffin and Peter Read
From Wrexham (judges Aled Lewis Evans and Gladys Mary Coles):
Martin Daws, Wendy Grey-Lloyd, Joyce Millington and Gareth Glyn Roberts
From Merthyr Tydfil (judges Ric Hool and Gus Payne):
Llyn Evans, Colin Palfrey, David John Steer and Paul Worthington
The final will take place in the Celebrity Restaurant at St David’s Hall on Wednesday 28 November 2007. The four finalists from each heat will battle it out at the Grand Final, but only one can be named Wales’ best performance poet and walk away with the first prize of £500.
Judging the Grand Final will be poet Herbert Williams, 2004 John Tripp Award winner Clare Potter, broadcaster Nicola Heywood Thomas and 2006 Dylan Thomas Prize short-listed author Matthew David Scott. You can find out more about the judges on the Academi Writers of Wales pages.
For the first time in the history of the competition there will be an additional prize awarded at the Grand Final. As well as the judges’ choice of winner, there will also be an award presented to the poet whose performance the audience liked the best. Following all sixteen finalists’ performances, the audience will vote for their favourite. The poet who wins over the crowd will be presented with the Audience Prize.
