A Day at the Opera

Wednesday 23 January 2008, 10am to 4pm
Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff
A day long seminar for writers and composers to explore the process, demands and necessary level of collaboration required for creating new opera.
For 2008 Academi has teamed up with Music Theatre Wales to organise a a day of talks and demonstrations on writing for opera – the art of the libretto. Delving into the often-forgotten genre of writing for opera, the day will be a chance for composers, writers and all involved in creating opera for the stage to share ideas and approaches.
Guest speakers include: James MacMillan and Michael Symmons Roberts the composer-librettist team behind WNO’s The Sacrifice; Morgan Hayes and Gary Owen, composer and writer on MTW’s most recent workshop under the Jerwood-MTW New Opera Plan (the outcome of the workshop process will be demonstrated and discussed as part of the day); and Gwyneth Lewis – Wales’ first National Poet, who already has experience in writing for opera and has stories and experiences to share.
The day is aimed at writers who are interested in finding out about writing for opera and collaborating with composers, and for composers who would like to find out more about the libretto.
