Word and Image: Poetry and Painting
With Gillian Clarke and Mary Lloyd Jones

Gillian Clarke   Mary Lloyd Jones

Monday 28 July  -  Saturday 2 August 2008
Tŷ Newydd Writers’ Centre
Cost: £480 (residential single) / £420 (residential shared)

One of Wales’ most exciting painters teams up with one of Wales’ best loved poets for a Poetry and Painting course at Tŷ Newydd. Mary Lloyd Jones and Gillian Clarke have worked together before as tutors and on creative projects: sharing influences, using each other’s work for inspiration, and using landscape and legend in their own work.

Both poets and painters use thought, imagination, rhythm, pattern, and external and internal landscapes. For beginners or experienced artists or poets, this course will offer fresh ways of seeing in a beautiful house in a lovely place. Use the garden, the beach, the synergy of poet and painter, or do your own thing. It should be a time of new beginnings.

Gillian Clarke is a poet, editor, playwright, writer-in-schools and occasional broadcaster. Her Collected Poems was published in 1997 by Carcanet and her most recent collection is Making the Beds for the Dead (Carcanet, 2004). A collection of prose writings, At the Source, was published by Carcanet in May, 2008. Gillian is the National Poet of Wales and President of Tŷ Newydd. www.gillianclarke.co.uk

Mary Lloyd Jones is an internationally renowned artist. Inspired by the rocky contours and wide-open spaces of her native Wales, she has exhibited in galleries as far afield as New York and Berlin. She is best known as a landscape painter but often uses text and letter shapes in her work and enjoys collaborating with poets. The Colour of Saying (Gomer, 2001) a quotation from Dylan Thomas, is the title of a book about Mary Lloyd Jones.
