The Senedd

Powys Writing Squad’s response to the new Assembly building

The Senedd

A great tree grows up
From where new ideas take root
A garden of thought

Inside the circle
They meet to shape the future.
The dragon’s wings spread.

A great glass palace
Overlooking the green bay.
Wales decided.

Cedar waves of thought
Reflect twisting rainbow arcs
Of white light spectrums.

Inspirational,
Transparent, but solid walls
Landmark of the bay.

Glass for clarity
Cedar wood for harmony
Senedd for Wales.

An architect’s dream,
A vision for the future
For the Welsh people.

Glass reflecting light.
Wood curves upwards and outwards.
Slate, the heart of Wales.

Sharp crisp hard and fast,
A glazed face, fighting for Wales.
Smooth, sleek, motionless.

Weaving arks, curved hull,
Glimmering ocean shining.
Future in their hands.

Water looking in
At Ffestiniog’s bruised stone:
Buried deep they talk.

The pulse of power
The heart of the Welsh nation
Beating at Senedd.

Electric wonder
In this strong star of power
Thoughts and power grow.

The pit and the word / wood
Past history shapes new ideas
And future greatness.

Tornado lifting
Ideas from the Senedd’s core
Shaping Wales’ future.

Windows made of light
Dance in rushing seas of wood
Show eternity.

Celtic tree spirits
Whisper wise words and warnings
To guide our nation.

Dimension wormhole
Travelling from old to new.
The future of Wales.

A great tree grows up
From where new ideas take root
A garden if thought.

Inside the circle
They meet to shape the future.
The dragon’s wings spread.

Be it enacted –
cedar-hulled, slate shod word-pit:
signature building.

These haiku are the result of a day’s workshop with Prof. Tony Curtis on 28th January, which included a visit to the Senedd and its chamber.
