Capital Poet
Cardiff’s First Capital Poet
| |
The Capital Poet post was created in 2005 to help Cardiff to celebrate the hundredth anniversary as a City and fiftieth anniversary as the Capital of Wales.
Poet Gillian Clarke was appointed in February 2005, officially inaugurated at the end of April 2005, and she began her official duties as Cardiff’s Capital Poet in May. Gillian’s year long appointment culminated in a celebratory event on 11 May 2006 at the Celebrity Restaurant in St David’s Hall.
Gillian’s requirements were to attend events celebrating Cardiff, compose poetry inspired by these events and the City, participate in civic ceremonies and procedures, and visit Cardiff schools to help the children of Cardiff write about their home.
The legacy which Gillian Clarke has left behind from her time as Capital Poet is first and foremost a collection of poetry of and for the City. The poems appear here on Academi’s website. Gillian has proved that the poet has a valuable place as part of City procedures.
