Glyn Jones Centre

| Academi was one of the founder members of the proposal for the Wales Millenium Centre project under the direction of Sir Alan Cox, as the idea for a centre for culture and the arts developed. Along with the other residents, Welsh National Opera, Diversions, Ty Cerdd, Hijinx, Yr Urdd and Touch Trust, Academi has a premises on the ground floor with access from Pierhead Street, opposite the National Assembly. Since these premises are not large enough to accommodate all of our staff, it was decided that all public–facing staff would be based in the WMC offices, which would become a resource centre for writers and the public, with the rest of the staff remaining at our main office in Mount Stuart Square. The Glyn Jones Centre opened on National Poetry Day in memory of Glyn Jones (1905-1995), one of the founders of Welsh writing in English. Thanks to a generous bequest made to the Academi by Glyn Jones and his wife Doreen, the Glyn Jones Centre has been established as a base for writers and a space for visitors to gain information on the practice, publication and promotion of writing. |
