On Saturday April 19th, Dr. Anthony Mellors comes to Llangattock in Powys to conduct a day’s exploration of the writings of Charles Olson, one of the great practitioners and theorisers of open-field poetry and Projective Verse. "Olson’s poetics of the Self is directly opposed to the complacency and pathos of the confessional ’I’ of mid-century American verse." (Anthony Mellors - Late Modernist Poetics from Pound to Prynne).

This is the second of the so-called “Glasfryn Seminars” organised by the poets Lyndon Davies and Graham Hartill. The first, on Dante, led by David Brancaleone, was a great success and gave the organisers confidence to begin planning a whole series of events in the same mould.

The intention behind the seminars is to create an arena in which writers (and artists) of every kind can come together on a regular basis, to exchange, discuss and quarrel over ideas. Each day is structured around an informal lecture, split over the course of a morning and an afternoon, delivered by an invited expert in their field. After that, the floor is thrown open for discussion and people are welcome, indeed encouraged, to stay around into the evening, to continue their conversations and share a glass or two of wine.

Dr. Anthony Mellors is the author of Late Modernist Poetics from Pound to Prynne (Manchester University Press, 2005) and various essays and articles on poetry and critical theory. With Fiona Robertson, he has edited Stephen Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage for Oxford University Press, and he is the editor of fragmente a magazine of contemporary poetics. He has taught at the universities of Oxford, Durham, and The Manchester Metropolitan University, and is currently a lecturer in English at Birmingham City University.

The event comprises two sessions, from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm, then from 2.30 pm onwards, followed by an open-ended discussion. Lunch is provided.
