Children’s poet and author of educational books. Born and educated in Scotland, now living and working in Wales. Former primary head teacher and College of Education lecturer. Writes for adults and children, also writes books for teachers. Tutors regularly in schools and is an experienced INSET tutor.
Patchwork of Poems (Folens, 2000) is a collection of her poems, written for the youngest children. The poems are written in a variety of styles and should be a source of enjoyment for the children. Some are pure fun, playing with rhymes, words and ideas. Others touch on deeper themes, encouraging the children to explore their feelings or flirt with the magic of the imagination. The collection includes rhyming and non–rhyming poems, poems using simile and metaphor and others that rely on patterned phrases which can be used as a model for the children’s own writing. Each poem is lavishly illustrated and may be photocopied. The text is intended to support teachers of the 5-7 age-group and suggests opportunities for creative talking and listening. It also offers ideas for writing, presentation and display with many examples of children’s work.
