FRANCIS, DICK

Dick FrancisNovelist. Francis was born in 1920 in Lawrenny, Pembrokeshire, the son of a jockey. Following service in the RAF during WWII he in turn became a successful jockey on the gruelling British steeplechase circuit. After retiring in 1957 he began a second career as a racing correspondent for the London Sunday Express. In 1962 he published his first thriller, followed by over three dozen bestselling murder mysteries. Although his books are set in the world of horseracing, it has been said that they are ’about’ racing only in the sense that Hamlet is ’about’ Denmark. Widely acknowledged as one of the world’s most successful thriller writers, he is the winner of three Edgar awards, the Crime Writers’ Association Gold Dagger and the Cartier Diamond Dagger for his outstanding contribution to crime writing. In 2000 he was awarded the CBE.
