Kelvin Hayes was born in Caerleon, Wales and raised in both New Zealand and the UK. Like Brian Eno he followed an education in the visual arts. However, rather than pursue music which already existed, integrity led him to writing (forming equivocal in 1998) fusing music terminology into literature; eg. sampled poetry and titles such as NZEP. He is hence unlike any other poet and has so far composed books of poetry, travelogues and has contributed to many publications and websites mainly in the fields of music and travel, notably All Music Guide, Rough Guide and Lonely Planet Wales.
His work has been acquired by libraries in Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and the UK and has aroused the interest of rock legend Robert Fripp, Iva Davies (Icehouse), Cocteau Twins and travel writer Peter Moore. Following a nomadic exploration of Europe (including a stint at George Whitman’s legendary Paris bookstore Shakespeare and Co.) and Australasia, Hayes returned to settle in his native Wales. At the time of writing he is working on a book of short stories Beats Per Minute and has pieced together Symposium of Empty Envelopes 1992–2006 (Equivocal, 2007) which includes work from all three of his poetry books, rare and previously unreleased work plus an essay and annotation on his poems and influences.
Kelvin is in the early stages of co-ordinating a multi media tour/experience. The tour is an elaborate poetry reading, where voiced poems are accompanied by visuals (animations and/or short films) and music by different artists hence creating a multi-media and multi cultural experience. So far he has musicians interested from Portugal and Canada but as yet no animators/film people have come forward.
