Food writer and novelist. Her reputation as an authority on traditional rural cooking was first established by works such as European Peasant Cookery (Corgi, 1986), European Festival Food (Corgi, 1990) and The Flavours of Andalucia (Collins & Brown, 1991), for which she received a Glenfiddich award. She has also written two autobiographies with recipes, Family Life (Bantam, 1996) and Still Life (Bantam, 1998), and two novels, Emerald (Bantam, 1994) and Marguerite (Corgi, 1997). After training at Eastbourne School of Domestic Economy, she and her family spent some years living in rural communities in Andalusia and Languedoc, where she developed the deep knowledge and affinity for the traditions of European peasant cookery which are such an important part of her work. She has contributed articles on food and cookery to many magazines and newspapers, including The Scotsman, The Sunday Telegraph, Waitrose Food Illustrated,
Decanter and Gourmet Magazine. She now lives in mid Wales and continues to travel.
