Novelist, translator, librettist and editor. Born in Essex of Welsh father and English mother, Simon was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He worked as an English teacher in Italy and Japan before moving to Cardiff in 1989. Simon is currently working as a dramaturg at Welsh National Opera. He has published Libretto translations of Der Freischutz, The Secret Marriage and The Jacobin, as well as Welsh National Opera programmes since 1989. Simon has translated more than 60 opera libretti for surtitles; published three novels and written reviews for The Literary Review, The Sunday Correspondent and The Independent. He lectures widely on opera, production, stage design and theatre history.
