WILLIAMS, EVAN GWYN

Born in 1938 in Neath to Welsh–speaking parents, Evan was raised in Rhigos Halt and Penderyn. He was educated at Rhigos Primary School, Vaynor and Penderyn Grammar School, Coleg Harlech and Manchester Polytechnic, where he gained an honours degree in English. Evan has worked as a quarry worker, steelworker, psychiatric nurse, civil servant and secondary school teacher. His stories and poems have been broadcast from the BBC and published in Stand, Tambimuttu’s London/New York, Poetry Wales, The Anglo–Welsh Review, Planet and Norman Hidden’s Workshop. He was a member of the Group Poetry Workshop which included Peter Porter, George MacBeth, Alan Brownjohn and Philip Hobsbawm which met at 21 Earl’s Court in 1968. From 1976-78 he worked for Tambimuttu on Poetry London/New York. Evan writes in a variety of forms including the sonnet, heroic couple and elaborate metaphysical schemata.
