Rachel Trezise was born in the Rhondda Valley in 1978. She went to Treorchy Comprehensive School and at the age of sixteen began to produce Smack Rupunzel, a local music fanzine. Rachel studied English and Media at the University of Glamorgan, and Irish history and geography at the University of Limerick. Her first novel In and Out of the Goldfish Bowl, (Parthian), won a place on the Orange Futures Award List in 2002. As a freelance arts and music journalist, she regularly writes for the Big Issue.
Her title Fresh Apples (Parthian, 2005), won the prestigious 2006 International Eds Dylan Thomas Prize for young writers at a glittering ceremony on the 27th October, 2006. Rachel collected her £60,000 cheque from Dylan Thomas’ daughter, Aeronwy, at a gala dinner at Swansea’s Brangwyn Hall. She was covered by the Today programme and her work was featured with articles in the news sections of The Independent and The Guardian, as well as being on BBC news. The Independent also printed an extract of the title story. There was also a 30 minutes arts programme on the event and Rachel on BBC 1 Wales. Parthian are currently planning a new trade paperback edition with a new cover.
Reviews:
"…It is remarkable for such a young writer to be so much of herself and not easily influenced in her work. Indeed, the confidence, coolness and maturity of tone in Fresh Apples is exceptional…"
Andrew Davies, The Independent
"…The publication of this collection of short stories confirms the arrival of a major new literary talent…At their best they have the emotional power, the simplicity and directness of high quality art…"
Mario Basini, The Western Mail
"…Laugh–Out-Loud-Funny..."
Peter Florence
“...It was an exciting and closely fought debate. Rachel won it because she has a totally original voice which didn’t remind us of anyone else...” Andrew Davies
