CULLEN, GREG

Greg CullenGreg Cullen was born in the Irish community in north–west London. He began his career in experimental theatre, T.I.E. and also large–scale community projects with Chats Palace in Hackney. He was appointed writer-in-residence with Theatr Powys in 1983 and wrote a multitude of plays including Taken Out which was recorded by the BBC as part of a Sony Award winning series. In 1989 he wrote Frida and Diego - A Love Story, winning a Fringe First at the Edinburgh Festival with a production by Red Shift Theatre Co. He founded the Mid Powys Youth Theatre in 1985 and served as Artistic director for over twelve years writing and directing multi-award winning productions such as Mary Morgan, Raging Angels, Tarzanne, Whispers in the Woods and Little Devils. The company appeared at the Royal National Theatre on two occasions and Greg was awarded the Promotion Wales award for making "an outstanding contribution to the lives of young people in Wales". 

Greg was appointed writer-in-residence at the Welsh College of Music and Drama for whom he wrote An Informers Duty, which was performed with an eighty-piece orchestra. Greg has written extensively for radio and television and won the PICS award for his short film Birdbrain. He was associate director for Hijinx for whom he wrote and directed Paul Robeson Knew My Father in 1998. Greg was appointed Artistic Director or The National Youth Theatre of Wales in 2002 for whom he completed a new bilingual production of Frida and Diego - A Love Story.

His recent works include a community radio play for the BBC called Mudcrawlers, a large-scale play for five South Wales schools entitled Ice Cream! and a new musical in New York called Abelard and Heloise. Greg is currently working on a new opera for the WNO and the Grand Opera House, Belfast, entitled The Tailor’s Daughter.
