HERBERT, JOYCE

Poet and writer. Born in the Rhondda in 1923. She was educated at University College, Cardiff and taught in schools in Wales and England. In the 1950s, she wrote radio scripts which were broadcast from Wales and London. Although her poetry was seen in the 50s and 60s, she began to be widely published in the late 70s. Her poetry has appeared in The Anglo–Welsh Review, Poetry Review, Poetry Wales, Stand, The Jewish Quarterly, Poetry Ireland Review and the Arts Council of Great Britain’s New Poetry. Her short stories have been commissioned for broadcast and have appeared in Stand, Madog and the Arts Council of Great Britain’s New Stories. She won a Welsh Arts Council award for short stories and was also a winner in the 1998 Rhys Davies Short Story Competition.
