STEAD, PETER

Peter SteadHistorian and critic. Born in Barry, 1943, the son of a police officer, Peter Price Stead was educated at Barry and Gowerton Grammar Schools and the University of Wales, Swansea, where he graduated with 1st class honours in History in 1964. From 1966 to 1997 he taught in the History Department at Swansea, spending two of those years in the U.S.A. as a Fulbright Fellow, first at Wellesley College, Mass and then at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington. In 1979 he stood as the unsuccessful (and last) parliamentary Labour candidate for the old Barry constituency. His early publications were in the field of Welsh Labour History, but in more recent years he has written on cultural issues. 

Since 2001 Peter has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Glamorgan. Between 1998 and 2004 he was a board member of Sgrîn, the Welsh Media Agency, chairing their Production Advisory Group. In 2000 he chaired the jury at the Celtic Film Festival and has twice been a judge of both the BBC Wales Artist of the Year and the Welsh Arts Council Book of the Year. In 2002/3 he was a member of the D.C.M.S. Panel that chose Liverpool to be 2008 Capital of Culture. He is a regular broadcaster and has presented programmes for BBC Radio Wales and Radio Four. With Patrick Hannon he constituted a successful Welsh team on Radio Four’s Round Britain Quiz. For the University of Wales Press, he has co–edited and contributed to four volumes of essays on rugby, football and music.  His interest in travel has taken him to over ninety countries.
