SULLIVAN, C.W.
Literary critic and scholar. C.W. Sullivan III received his BA and MA at the State University of New York at Albany, and it was during his MA work in medieval studies that he discovered the Mabinogi. During his studies for a DA and a PhD at the University of Oregon, he continued to explore the Welsh materials, and his dissertation, ’Welsh Mythology in Modern Fiction’, was developed into a book, Welsh Celtic Myth in Modern Fantasy (1989), which was short listed for the Mythopoeic Society’s literary criticism award. A Professor of English at East Carolina University, Sullivan has been coming to Wales to research at the National Library since 1982, and his articles on mythology, folklore, and fantasy literature have appeared in a variety of journals and anthologies. Winner of a Centennial Award from the American Folklore Society (1989), East Carolina University College of Arts and Sciences Research Award
(1998), Irish American Cultural Institute Research Awards (1998 and 2002), University of North Carolina Board of Governors Distinguished Professor for Teaching (2000), East Carolina University Board of Trustees Distinguished Research Professor of English (2001), and East Carolina University Harriot College Distinguished Professor of Arts and Sciences (2003).
