Ken Follett was born in Cardiff in 1949 and was brought up in the city until the age of ten, when his family moved to London. He later returned to Cardiff and worked as a reporter for the Western Mail and South Wales Echo from 1971-1973. He shot to fame in 1978 with the publication of the spy thriller Eye of the Needle (Futura, 1978), which became an international bestseller and sold over 10 million copies. He has since written many equally successful novels, published by Pan Macmillan. Several of his novels have been made into movies or TV mini-series. In recent years he has become well-known for his association with the Labour party. Ken has recently published a sequel to the extremely popular The Pillars of the Earth (William Morrow, 1989), entitled World Without End (Dutton Books, 2007). He has also written under the name of Zachary Stone.
