EVANS, GEORGE M

George M Evans is a former boxer from Merthyr Tydfil, where he was born in 1943. He became Welsh amateur lightweight champion, sparred with Howard Winstone, fought professionally for seven years, and for over a quarter of a century was himself a trainer, manager and promoter.

In his autobiography A Bagful of Monkeys (Gwasg Carreg Gwalch, 2004), he writes colourfully about his working class upbringing, his schooling, and about boxing, the world he knows imtimately from the inside. Evans has been at the sharp end long enough to know that boxers are commodities, at the disposal of cynical promoters and "London money men", each one "as crafty as a bagful of monkeys."
