DYER, HEATHER

Heather DyerChildrens’ author and illustrator Heather Dyer was born in 1970, grew up and now lives in Conwy, North Wales. Her family moved to Canada when she was ten. After she left school she did a lot of travelling and worked as a teacher of English. She started writing at the age of seven. Her books for 7–11 year olds are inspired by local settings and appeal equally to both boys and girls. They usually involve an ordinary sort of person who meets someone rather unusual who turns their world upside down.

Heather Dyer as a childThe Fish in Room 11
(The Chicken House, 2003) was inspired by the Victorian seaside resorts on the North Wales coast. Toby was abandoned at The Grand Hotel when he was a baby. His only outfit is a pair of pyjamas. He works hard and plays hardly at all – but his luck changes when he meets an unconventional mermaid family living under the pier.

In The Girl with the Broken Wing (The Chicken House, 2005), twins James and Amanda are in bed when it happens: they hear a sound like a wet cabbage hitting a wall, then a clattering on the roof tiles, followed by a tapping at the window. It’s a girl with a broken wing - and she’s here to stay. A visit to Beddgelert is the start of many misadventures.

The Boy in the Biscuit Tin (The Chicken House, 2007) was June 2007 Book of the Month in Waterstones. Heather is a Member of Academi.
