A native New Yorker, Dr Brenda Assael obtained her BA from Barnard College, Columbia University (1989). She received her MA (1991) and Ph.D. (1997) in History from the University of Toronto. Before taking up a History lectureship at the University of Wales, Swansea in 1998, she taught in the Bronx at Lehman College, City University of New York.

Her book, The Circus and Victorian Society, was published in 2005 by the University of Virginia Press as part of its Victorian Literature and Culture series. Research leave to complete it was made possible by the Leverhulme Trust and the Arts and Humanities Research Board. Brenda has also earned external grants from the British Academy, the Marc Fitch Fund (Oxford), the Society for Theatre Research, the Theodora Bosanquet Bursary for Research in British Studies and the Midwest Victorian Studies Association. Her articles appear in An Age of Equipoise? Reassessing Mid–Victorian Britain, ed. Martin Hewitt  (Ashgate, 2000) and The Streets of London, 1660–1870, eds. Tim Hitchcock and Heather Shore (Rivers Oram, 2003).

Her new book-length project concerns the restaurant in nineteenth century London. Brenda holds a Large Research Grant from the British Academy for this project. In the autumn 2005, she will be a Visiting Fellow at the Charles Phelps Taft Research Center at the University of Cincinnati, USA.
