PHILLIPS, BETHAN
Bethan was born in Lampeter and still lives there. She read Latin and English at Aberystwyth and then worked as a Research Assistant in the Education Department University College Wales. Bethan went on to hold teaching posts in London, Rhymni and Aberaeron. She has also been employed by Dyfed County Council to promote Media Studies and in 1994, her video with camera man Mike Dyson entitled Pathways to the Past was awarded the Channel 4 award for the best educational video of the year.
Bethan has written many programmes for radio and television and has penned a number of books to accompany her series. Her television work includes the series Dihirod Dyfed for S4C, which was based on true stories of murders in west Wales, and two films in Welsh and English on the life of Joseph Jenkins, the Swagman from Ceredigion. Her radio programmes on Radio Cymru have included pieces on Hedd Wyn, Y Dyn Hysbys, and Joseph Jenkins.
As a writer, Bethan has had a number of articles published in the Western Mail, Country Quest, Yr Enfys Y Faner and Cristion. She has written a number of socio–historical Welsh biographies and narratives. They include Peterwell (Gomer, 1983), which traces the story of the infamous squire Sir Herbert Lloyd of Peterwell mansion in Lampeter and Dihirod Dyfed (Hughes & Sons, 2003), which was based on her television series. She has also published Rhwng Dau Fyd (Cymdeithas Lyfrau Ceredigion, 1998), based on the diaries of Joseph Jenkins, which was one of three books short–listed for the Wales Book of the Year 1999.
