MA in Writing: Practice and Context
This innovative part-time programme is designed for graduates who want to develop new directions as writers, whether in creative or professional contexts. Taught by published authors, it explores the links between different areas of writing through practice-based seminars and workshops. It also considers wider questions such as how creativity relates to writing, and how language shapes, and is shaped by, the culture in which it is produced.
The course can be taken as a Postgraduate Certificate (1 year), Diploma (2 years) or MA (3 years), subject to validation. It runs on Tuesdays in Semesters 1 and 2.
Modules offered in 2007-8 are Applications of Writing and Creative Writing, Creative Thinking. These two modules can be taken individually, or together as a Postgraduate Certificate course, or as the first stage of an MA.
October 2007: Applications of Writing 30 credits
How do writers adapt their language and style for specific purposes? Experienced tutors and visiting professional writers will present sessions on areas such as journalism, report writing, advertising, travel writing and children’s fiction. The course also offers practical advice on presenting your work to publishers.
January 2008: Creative Writing, Creative Thinking 30 credits
Can writing help us to think more creatively? Do some ways of thinking help us to write better? These ideas will be explored through workshops in poetry and fiction led by published writers.
