Write for Life - Prisons Project
Academi has secured further funding from Welsh Assembly Government to continue the Write for Life project in Welsh prisons. Over the next year, Academi will continue to work in partnership with the five prisons in Wales (HMP Cardiff, HMP & YOI Parc, HMP Prescoed, HMP Swansea and HMP Usk) to engage adult prisoners whose literacy skills are below Basic Skills Level One in literature-related activities. Prisoners will be invited to attend creative writing workshops and reading groups along with a host of other workshops to experience literature and introduce them to working professional writers. The aim of the current project is to engage emergent readers to be creative and learn within the prison community.
Without the ability to read and write, it is almost impossible for prisoners to engage in the further learning and training they need to address their offending behaviour, gain qualifications and find employment. There is a strong argument that poor reading and writing skills are a major contributing factor in offending. Being involved in literature, whether it is reading or creative writing, could lead to prisoners entering education, training and employment for the first time, and also improve their attitudes and behaviour and even family relationships.
